Dales Jam was formed in 2003 by a group of people of all ages and
musical abilities, who wanted a time and a place to meet up and play music.
Since then, under the guidance of a professional music director (Richard
Ormrod) and after a move from Linton to a new home at the Auction Mart on
the edge of Skipton, Dales Jam has grown steadily in members. Now, on a Monday
night between 7 and 9.30 pm, as many as 35 people gather for a weekly workshop
to learn and have fun. Then, throughout the year, members play at gigs ranging
from festivals to concert halls.
As a community group, Dales Jam thinks that anyone can participate. That's why there is no age restriction, and all musical abilities are catered for - and we certainly don't audition new members. There are opportunities to take first steps into improvising (one member described it as 'improvising in a safe environment'), but only if you want to! All our music is arranged to fit members' abilities... although the workshops will lead to you stretching yourself musically. We started out primarily as a jazz based group, and much of what we do is still rooted there, but it's world music based, rather than 'trad'. We play music with African rhythms, Klezmer, Cuban, and occasionally veer off into Stevie Wonder arrangements, before taking a trip to Japan... we're easily influenced! Much of our music is arranged by our MD, but members are also encouraged to contribute their own arrangements or original pieces. Our
